Cyclist Killed In Melrose Hit-And-Run Collision

NYPD Investigating Fatal Melrose, Bronx Hit-And-Run Car Accident Along East 161st Street

BRONX, NEW YORK (June 13, 2024) – A 24-year-old bicyclist has tragically died in a Bronx collision along East 161st Street by Melrose Avenue.

New York City police are saying that the collision took place around 6:00 a.m. on Friday. A cyclist was heading through the intersection when he was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

That driver left the scene of the collision. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the cyclist.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Liability For Bronx Hit-And-Run Collisions

Certain locations tend to have a higher percentage of bicycle collisions. According to the NHTSA, “Bicyclist fatalities tend to occur in urban areas more than rural areas, with urban fatalities accounting for approximately 85% of bicyclist fatalities. The proportion of bicyclist fatalities occurring in urban areas increased from 69% in 2011 to 85% in 2021.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting bicyclists.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down in areas with high bicycle traffic.
  • Drivers should use their turn signals to let others know about their intentions.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. To that end, drivers must never travel faster than what would be reasonable given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. For example, driving the speed limit could be considered dangerous during periods of inclement weather. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any collision.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Accident reconstruction may need to be performed.

It can be hard to know what to do after a bicycle accident. Victims may have to contend with life-altering injuries that impede their ability to work. It is crucial to speak with an experienced bicycle accident attorney after any collision. An attorney can let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued.
