New Hartford Police Seeking Help From The Public After Bicyclist Seriously Injured In Bus Accident
NEW HARTFORD, NEW YORK (January 14, 2024) β A 67-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured in a New Hartford bicycle accident on Oxford Road.
New Hartford officials are saying that the incident took place around 11:14 a.m. on Friday. The bicyclist was heading down the road when they were hit by a bus.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. They were then taken to the hospital with multiple serious injuries.
A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Buses and trucks can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, βIn 2021, 5,904 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal crashes, a 18-percent increase from 2020. From 2020 to 2021, large truck and bus fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by all motor vehicles increased from 0.176 to 0.191, 7 percent below the 21st-century peak of 0.205 in 2000.β Bus drivers should take several measures in order to avoid collisions.
Bus drivers are required to exercise caution to avoid collisions with pedestrians and cyclists. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a bicyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bicycle accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where one or more drivers are not following traffic regulations. In some cases, bus drivers may be forced to work long hours and may naturally become fatigued. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the bicyclist injured in this collision. It is our sincere hope that they are able to fully recover. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened.
