Army Vet Remains in Coma After Long Island Car Accident With Suspected Drunk Driver

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK (December 31, 2025) – A US Army veteran was seriously injured in a head-on Long Island car accident on Express Drive South.

Long Island officials are saying that the accident took place around 10 PM on Monday. A suspected drunk driver was involved in a head-on collision in a Toyota Tacoma.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. The victim was transported to the hospital with major injuries and placed in a medically induced coma.

The other driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. A full investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.

Liability for Long Island DUI Car Accidents

Driver intoxication remains a leading cause of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “In 2020, 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for 30% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. This was a 14.3% increase compared to the number of crash deaths involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2019.” Even small amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.

  • Drivers under the influence are far more likely to leave their own lane of traffic.
  • Intoxicated drivers are less able to maintain a constant speed.
  • Intoxicated drivers are far more likely to miss hazards in the roadway.

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There’s a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that collides with another vehicle while intoxicated. Any person injured in a car accident with a drunk driver may be able to pursue damages through a personal injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
