City Records Show Complaints of an Illegal Basement Conversion at the 653 58th Street Row House Where Six People Died
SUNSET PARK, NEW YORK (November 7, 2026) – Six people were killed and nine others were injured in a house fire at a two-story row house at 653 58th Street in Sunset Park.
Kings County officials are saying that the fire occurred around 1:39 a.m. on Thursday. Residents were inside the wood-frame home between Sixth and Seventh avenues when flames spread through the basement and both upper floors, and the cause has not yet been determined.
Neighbors called 911 and firefighters arrived at the scene roughly 3 minutes later. Crews were able to make it inside of the building through the rear entrance and were able to reach two people that were trapped behind window bars on the first floor of the unit.
Tragically, four adults were pronounced deceased at the scene. Another two people died at the hospital. Nine more people were injured following the blaze.
A full investigation into the source of the fire remains ongoing at this time.
New York law treats fire safety in residential buildings as a core duty of ownership. The state’s Multiple Dwelling Law declares insufficient protection against fire a menace to public safety. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Responsibility for a fire will typically turn on several key questions.
Many deadly home fires share a common gap in protection. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly three out of every five home fire deaths over the four-year period from 2018 through 2022 happened in homes that did not have smoke alarms that were operational. Victims of residential fires are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person who died in a fire.
We at GLK Law offer our deepest condolences to the families of the six people who died in the 58th Street row house fire in Sunset Park. We hope this tragedy leads to accountability and to stronger enforcement against unsafe conversions in Brooklyn’s older wood-frame homes. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the authorities.
