Nearly 40 People Injured in New Jersey Turnpike Multi-Vehicle Collision Involving Bus Near Mile Marker 56
BURLINGTON COUNTY, NEW JERSEY (May 6, 2025) – An estimated 39 people were injured in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike after Van Hool buses and other vehicles collided.
Burlington County officials are saying that the accident took place around 1 PM on Sunday. Two Van Hool buses were traveling down the roadway.
One of the buses rear-ended the other. This caused a chain reaction crash with three other vehicles. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims.
At least 39 people were taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment for their injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the Burlington County collision remains ongoing.
Many people are injured in car accidents every year. According to the National Safety Council, “Between 1913 and 2023, motor-vehicle deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles decreased 95%, from 33 to 1.57, respectively. In 1913, only 1.3 million vehicles were registered, and 4,200 people died on the road. In 2023, 285 million vehicles were registered, and 44,762 people died on the road.” Buses can be particularly dangerous for several reasons.
Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Among other things, they must maintain a safe speed at all times. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a vehicle ahead of them, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is crucial that certain actions are taken after any bus accident.
Many of the injuries associated with car accidents may not be obvious. It is common for many injuries to be obscured by adrenaline immediately after a crash. The FMCSA requires buses that can carry 16 or more passengers to have at least $5 million in liability coverage. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all the people injured in this collision on the New Jersey Turnpike. This was a preventable crash that should not have taken place. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police.
