MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (July 24, 2024) – At least 37 people were injured in a Manhattan MTA bus accident at the intersection of First Avenue and 23rd Street.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night. A double-decker bus rear-ended an MTA bus.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. Many people were treated at the scene, and several individuals were transported to a local hospital.
A full investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Bus collisions are very consequential and lead to many injuries and deaths each year. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” There are a number of common causes of bus accidents.
Bus companies are considered common carriers, and their drivers must do everything in their power to avoid collisions. Bus drivers must continuously scan the road ahead of them and slow down in order to avoid collisions. If a bus driver fails to slow down and hits another vehicle in their own lane, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.
Bus accidents can be extremely traumatic events for victims and their families. Many people may need to take extensive periods of time off of work. They may also be left with high medical bills. Any person injured in an MTA bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
