Liability For New York Bus Accidents

Thousands of people are injured in bus collisions every year. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury.” Pedestrians, cyclists, and those in passenger vehicles are the most at risk of being injured in the event of a bus crash. Bus companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent collisions.

  • Bus drivers should be well trained.
  • Buses should be periodically inspected and well maintained.
  • Bus companies should ensure that their drivers are well qualified.

All bus drivers have a legal obligation to exercise a great deal of care in order to prevent their passengers from being injured. Many collisions involve drivers who make dangerous left turns. Before a driver attempts to make a left turn, they must yield the right of way to vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard. If a driver makes a dangerous turn prior to a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage

Bus accidents can be very traumatic for those who are injured. Victims may need to take extensive periods away from work in order to recover. It is also common for them to be saddled with high medical bills. Any person who is injured in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
