Buses are typically very safe for passengers. But they pose a number of hazards for pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Several factors could contribute to any bus accident.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Many crashes involve drivers who make dangerous left turns. According to New York Vehicle Code 1141, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” Several steps should be taken after any bus accident.
Buses can be difficult to operate in the best of circumstances. These vehicles have large blind spots, and bus drivers may not see other vehicles before a collision. This is why it is so important that bus drivers are well-trained. There could be numerous sources of liability for any collision. After any bus accident, it is important to consult with a skilled bus accident attorney who can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to all of the drivers injured in this Bronx collision. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. It is our sincere hope that steps are taken to prevent other accidents like this.
