103 Uber Drivers Accused of Sexual Assault in 4 Years

Uber advertises itself as providing safe rides home. But a CNN investigation found at least 103 drivers have been accused of sexual assault or abuse over the last four years. One particular victim says she feels anxiety and depression after seeking a safe ride home by using the convenient Uber app, but instead getting assaulted. Her Uber driver is charged with felony sexual battery and is facing trial.

This victim is one of many. The CNN investigation uncovered dozens of similar cases. None of the information comes from Uber, which refused to provide any data on how many of its drivers have been accused of sexual assaults. Instead, CNN had to search through public records, police records and court cases to find out that at out of the 103 accused Uber drivers, at least 31 have been convicted on charges ranging from battery to rape, and dozens of criminal and civil cases are pending trial.

A similar CNN review also found 18 cases accusing Lyft drivers of sexual assault. Multiple experts state that the actual numbers of both Lyft and Uber drivers accused of sexual assault is much higher. The low numbers may be the result of the crimes not being reported, lack of sufficient evidence to prosecute, or Uber settling the cases quietly and confidentially before a civil case can even be filed.

Becoming a driver for Uber is not that difficult. The process is done completely online without the requirement of any background checks that involve fingerprints. Uber does its own background checks. Critics of the company’s lax background checks say the company needs to do more to ensure the safety of their riders.
