Worker Injured In Industrial Accident At Rochester Paper Factory

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK (April 11, 2023) – A man was critically injured in a Rochester industrial accident at the International Paper factory located on Boxart Street.

Rochester police officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. A worker became trapped in a machine at the paper factory.

It remains unclear how the worker became trapped. He was eventually freed by co-workers who began performing CPR before first responders arrived.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment.

A full investigation into the accident at the International Paper factory remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Rochester Industrial Accidents

Despite improved safety standards in the workplace, many workers are still injured every year in industrial accidents. According to one report from Briotix Health, nearly 3 million people were injured in industrial accidents in 2017 alone. Most accidents at manufacturing plants occur when workers come into contact with heavy machinery. There are many steps that can be taken in order to prevent workplace accidents.

  • Workers should receive adequate training to identify workplace hazards.
  • Workers should understand the proper lock-out/tag-out procedures when they are dealing with heavy machinery.
  • Worksites should be maintained in a reasonably safe condition.

A paper factory could be liable for  an industrial accident through New York Labor Law § 200. This statute is a codification of an employer’s general duty to maintain job sites in a safe condition. According to the statute, “All machinery, equipment, and devices in such places shall be so placed, operated, guarded, and lighted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to all such persons.” When a company fails to provide workers with a reasonably safe environment, they can be held liable for that worker’s injuries. Victims of industrial accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Many workers are not able to return to work for several weeks or months after they have been injured. Any worker that is injured in an industrial accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages and medical bills. An industrial accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
