A 52 year old construction worker fell to his death from the 16th floor at a construction site in Manhattan. He was a unionized sheet metal worker who had been with Local 28 for 24 years. The construction worker was working at the NYU Ambulatory Care Center located at 41st Street between Third and Second Avenue in Midtown Manhattan when the accident happened.
The city Department of Buildings said the fatal fall was not related to the construction inside the building. The worker arrived to work at 6:30 am on February 26th and took a hoist elevator that runs in the back of the building. He fell two hours later in the rear of the building, away from public view. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to trauma throughout his entire body. The cause of the fatal fall is still under investigation.
Falls Are Leading Cause of Construction Site Fatal Accidents
Falls remain the leading cause of work-related deaths in constructions, accounting for approximately one-third of the total number of fatalities in this industry. In 2017, there were 366 fall fatalities out of 971 total fatalities in construction. According to the CDC, 61% of fatal falls in construction occur in small businesses with fewer than 10 employees. Almost two-thirds of fatal construction falls are from roofs, scaffolds, and ladders. Hispanics are 29% of the U.S. construction workforce yet account for 39% of fatal falls to a lower level.
