Woman Killed In Commack Car Accident Along Harner Road

COMMACK, NEW YORK (September 3, 2023) – A Bay Shore woman has tragically died in a Commack car accident while jogging along the shoulder of Harner Road.

Commack police officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:20 a.m. Thursday. A woman was jogging down the roadway when she was hit by a Chrysler Voyager.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, she later died due to the severity of her injuries.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Commack Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are uniquely vulnerable to the hazards posed by motor vehicles. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “More than 7,000 pedestrians were killed on our nation’s roads in crashes involving a motor vehicle in 2020. That’s about one death every 75 minutes.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a pedestrian collision.

  • Pedestrian collisions are more likely to happen at night and early morning.
  • Pedestrians are more likely to be involved in collisions because they are small and can be difficult to spot.
  • A large portion of pedestrian collisions involve an intoxicated driver.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Drivers need to slow down when approaching pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals. If a driver fails to slow down and hits a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The family of any person that died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
