Woman Injured In Brooklyn Bus Accident On Flatbush Avenue

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (November 17, 2022) – A 79-year-old woman has tragically died in a Brooklyn bus accident as she was walking along Flatbush Avenue.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday. A 79-year-old woman was crossing the roadway when she was hit by a bus.

The bus was heading northbound at the time of the crash. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.

Sadly, the woman died as a result of her injuries. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Brooklyn Bus Accidents

MTA bus accidents are far more common than many people realize. According to the New York Post, “MTA buses racked up at least 21,823 crashes, collisions and other mishaps over 31 months beginning in 2015 — an average of 23 per day, The Post has found. At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured during the time period, according to the MTA.” There are a number of factors that can make buses particularly dangerous for pedestrians.

  • Buses have large blind spots.
  • Buses weigh much more than passenger vehicles.
  • Buses take much longer to stop than passenger vehicles.

Bus drivers must get a commercial driver’s license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Buses tend to have large blind spots and many collisions occur when buses make dangerous turns in the roadway. If a bus driver was negligent and contributed to an accident, the company or school district that they work for could be held at fault. Depending on the facts of any case the company that a bus driver worked for could be held at fault. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

The family of any pedestrian that is killed in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, bus companies will often fight to deny liability for any bus accident. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
