Liability In Catskill Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), “There were 35,766 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2020 in which 38,824 deaths occurred. This resulted in 11.7 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.34 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The fatality rate per 100,000 people ranged from 4.9 in Massachusetts to 25.4 in Mississippi.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident.

  • Collisions are more likely to occur when drivers are speeding.
  • Collisions are more likely to occur when drivers are distracted.
  • Collisions are more likely to occur when drivers are intoxicated.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid accidents. Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of collisions that a person can be involved in. They tend to happen when drivers cross over double yellow lines. Any driver that crosses into opposing lanes of traffic prior to an accident could be held at fault through a negligence claim. Victims of head-on collisions tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken Bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Organ damage

Any person that is injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many accident victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for some time after an accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
