Liability In Big Flats Car Accidents

Car accidents are a major source of serious injury and death in the United States.  According to the IIHS, “There were 33,244 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2019 in which 36,096 deaths occurred. This resulted in 11.0 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.11 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.” There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before turning.
  • Drivers should be well rested before operating their vehicle.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and drugs.

Many collisions are due to drivers that are not following traffic regulations. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall operate a motor vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. Even driving the speed limit could be dangerous during times of inclement weather. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Any person that is injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or months after an accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
