Two People Injured In Amazon Crane Collapse Accident In Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE, NEW YORK (March 21, 2023) – Two people were injured in a Hawthorne crane collapse accident at an Amazon warehouse on Saw Mill River Road.

Hawthorne police officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday. A crane at the Amazon warehouse spontaneously collapsed and hit two nearby workers.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident in order to help both of the victims. One worker sustained a leg injury and another worker sustained a head injury.

Both were taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment. OSHA is currently conducting an investigation into what may have caused the crane to collapse.

Liability For Hawthorne Crane Collapses

Cranes are an essential component of most construction projects. But they can also be very dangerous. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “From 2011 to 2015, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) reported 220 total crane-related deaths, an average of 44 per year over this 5-year period. Men accounted for 217 of the 220 fatal injuries involving cranes.” There are a number of common causes of crane collapse accidents.

  • Cranes may collapse due to improper assembly.
  • Cranes may collapse due to mechanical failures.
  • Cranes may collapse due to carrying excessive loads.

When a worker is injured in New York, they will typically have recourse through a worker’s compensation claim. Worker’s compensation is based off of a no-fault insurance scheme. An injured worker may also be able to seek aid through a third party liability claim. For example, the company that assembled a crane could be liable in the event a crane collapsed and injured workers. Victims of crane collapses tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Many victims of workplace accidents may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or months after they were injured. Moreover, they may be forced to miss work for long periods. An injured worker can seek aid through a civil claim. Damages can help cover many of the expenses that can come with a serious accident. A construction attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
