Liability In MTA Bus Accidents

Thousands of people are seriously injured in bus accidents every year. According to the Journalist’s Resource, “The researchers note that, on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Pedestrians and those in smaller passenger vehicles tend to be at the greatest risk of being seriously injured. There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a bus accident.

  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Speeding
  • Dangerous turns

Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous liable parties for a bus accident. New York City could potentially be liable for a crash if a FDNY fire truck driver was negligent. Many collisions are due to drivers that are speeding or making unprotected turns in the roadway. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires buses that can carry 16 or more passengers have at least $5,000,000 in liability coverage. Any person that is injured in a collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. A New York City bus accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
