According to New York State Police (NYSP), three people were killed in a wrong-way car accident on Sunday, January 22. Officials received the initial call for the accident around 7:45 that evening.
The motorist that caused the wrong-way accident was traveling westbound on Interstate 88. He crossed the median and collided head-on into a car traveling eastbound on I-88. The eastbound vehicle was carrying a family of five, including
the parents, a 19-year-old son and two 12-year-old twin girls. Both parents died on impact. The children were taken to Albany Medical Center, with one of the daughters and the son in critical condition. All three children are expected to live.
The driver of the vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the interstate was reportedly ejected from his car. He was taken to the hospital but died early the next morning.
Officials are still investigating why the wrong-way driver crossed over the median. However, it was reported that the driver had suffered a medical episode while at work that same day. He was the ambulance to the hospital after the episode but released the same day.
