Three Pedestrian Killed In Newark Valley Car Accident on State Route 38

NEWARK VALLEY, NEW YORK (May 27, 2023) – Three pedestrians were killed and one was critically injured in a Newark Valley car accident on State Route 38.

Newark Valley police officials are saying that the incident began around 11:23 a.m. over the weekend. Four pedestrians were crossing the road when they were hit by a vehicle.

The vehicle involved was identified as a black 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help all of the victims.

Sadly, three people died and one person remains in critical condition following the crash.

Liability For Newark Valley Pedestrian Accidents

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

The family of any person that is killed in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, though, drivers will often fight hard to deny liability for any collision. This is why it is so important that all evidence is properly preserved after any crash.
