What Is Belviq?

Belviq is a prescription weight loss drug manufactured by Eisai, Inc. The drug was approved by the FDA in 2012 to treat obesity. The active ingredient, lorcaserin, promotes weight loss by altering signals in the patient’s brain to trigger loss of appetite and hunger. These chemical changes increases feeling of fullness – convincing the brain and body to reduce the intake of calorie and consume much less than the individual normally would. It was available by prescription in its original form and in an extended release version, Belviq X. Both are the subject of the Belviq lawsuits.

The FDA announced in February that Eisai, Inc. had voluntarily recalled the drug. This recall came after the FDA completed its review of the results from the recent CAMELLIA-TIMI 61 clinical trial by Eisai, Inc. that revealed an unacceptable increased risk of cancer with Belviq. The manufacturer had failed to warn physicians and patients of the dangers. The FDA further announced that the risks of using Belviq outweighs any benefits it may have had and recommends that patients stop taking Belviq immediately.
