On August 28 and 29, the Bronx community will be hosting the 15th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament, the most action-filled street basketball on the East Coast. The Gardiner family turned tragedy into hope and triumph through the game of basketball after losing six family members in a crash on the Bronx River Parkway in 2006. The Gardiners established The Gardiner Foundation to turn the goal into reality.
The Gardiner Foundation, a nonprofit organization, builds upon the Gardiner’s family legacy of helping others in need and involvement in the game of basketball by providing educational scholarships, financial and emotional support, and burial assistance to other families who have experienced an unexpected tragic loss. The Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament has been held every summer for the past 14 years in the Bronx. This summer, the teams will include not only those from the Bronx and other local communities, but also teams from Mississippi and New Jersey.
The Gardiner Foundation had to shift their focus in 2020/2021 to help families struggling most during the pandemic. In addition to distributing masks and providing access to education and information regarding COVID-19 over the last year, the Foundation has also provided:
- Groceries to more than 2,000 families through “pop-up” pantries throughout the community
- Supplies bi-monthly to two women’s shelters in the Bronx, including hot meals, diapers, blankets, toiletries, masks and cleaning supplies
- 1,200 turkeys during Thanksgiving and more than 350 toys during the Christmas season to families most in need
14 Years of Providing Hope to Others
This two-day event attracts local media coverage and is one of the Bronx’s most anticipated summer attractions. The Gardiner Foundation has reached its goals of assisting others in similar tragic situations with the help of many donors. To date, The Gardiner Foundation has handed out 51 scholarships and is adding to this number at this year’s event. The scholarship recipients will use the money to pay for their academic future.
The Foundation will be distributing 700 backpacks to school age children that will include pencils, notebooks, sharpeners and other school supplies. They will also raffle off educational devices, including 24 tablets and 2 iPods.
