On August 18th and 19th, the Bronx community hosted the 13th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament, the most action-filled street basketball on the East Coast. The Gardiner family turned tragedy into hope and triumph through the game of basketball after losing family members in a crash on the Bronx River Parkway in 2006. The Gardiners established The Gardiner Foundation to turn the goal into reality.
The Gardiner Foundation is a nonprofit organization that builds upon the Gardiner’s family legacy of helping others in need and involvement in the game of basketball by providing educational scholarships, financial and emotional support, and burial assistance to other families who have experienced an unexpected tragic loss. The Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament has been held every summer for the past 13 years in the Bronx.
Helping Us Help Others
The Gardiner Foundation has reached its goals of assisting others in similar tragic situations with the help of many donors. One of the highlights of the tournament was a ceremony for those individuals who lost family members this year in an accident. During the event, a preacher spoke to the families as they prayed. There was also a soloist who sang and each family was presented with a plaque with the name of the deceased family member.
The Foundation also awarded scholarships to 10 local students and gave away backpacks and school supplies. The scholarship recipients will use the money to pay for their academic future. The recipients have not only excelled in their academics as evidenced by their notable grade point averages, but they have also reached excellence in sports and managed to give back to their communities through hours of volunteer service. Below is a list of the recipients:
- Bryce Branch
- Dontez Braxton
- Brittani Broderick
- Diamond Brown
- Jayvawn Clarke
- Tyrone Davis III
- Anthony Greer
- Kendall McInnis
- Skye Michele Saunders
- Dane Simpson
