The production of testosterone is necessary for the male body to maintain bone density, muscle strength and sperm production. As men age, the production of testosterone naturally begins to decline. Testosterone replacement therapy is often prescribed to address this decline and reduce and possibly even reverse the effects of loss of testosterone.
However, the advantages of testosterone replacement therapy are also accompanied by its disadvantages. According to a new study published by the Public Library of Science (PLOS), testosterone replacement therapy may double the risk of heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism is some men.
The Medical Studies: PLOS, etc.
The PLOS study, led by William Finkle, was the latest in a series of studies that have linked testosterone replacement therapy to serious cardiac side effects. This study examined more than 55,000 men and revealed that men aged 65 and older had doubled their risk of heart attack within 90 days of starting the therapy. The study further revealed that younger men with a history of heart trouble tripled their risk of heart attacked with the use of testosterone therapy.
A similar study reported in The Journal of the American Medical Association found a 30 percent increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke in men over 65 years of age who are on testosterone replacement therapy.
The Commencement of Lawsuits
These medical studies provide promising evidence of causation and great insight into the dangers of testosterone replacement therapy. In addition, the Finkle study and others have also laid out the path for a new wave of legal claims involving the side effects of testosterone.
A key factor in determining whether you have a valid testosterone injury claim includes suffering a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism within 90 days of starting testosterone therapy.
If you or a loved one has suffered a cardiovascular complication due to testosterone replacement therapy, you should consult an experienced New York product liability attorney to protect your legal rights.
