An 18-year-old passenger in the car sadly died due to their injuries. A full investigation into the Beekmantown collision remains ongoing.

Liability In Beekmantown Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Compared to 2011, 2020 motor-vehicle deaths increased by more than 19% while the mileage death rate has increased by more than 21% and the vehicle registration death rate increased 10%.” There are many factors that could potentially contribute to collisions including:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Driver fatigue

All drivers must exercise due care in order to prevent collisions. Many accidents are due to drivers that make dangerous lane changes. According to New York Vehicle Code § 1128, no person shall move from the lane that they are in unless such a movement can be made with relative safety. Lane change accidents are more likely to occur when drivers fail to check their blind spots. There are many steps that should be taken after any collision.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough, independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any person that dies due to the negligence of another driver may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and funeral expenses. It is extremely important that evidence is preserved after any collision. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
