Multiple People Injured In Malta Box Truck Accident Involving Ambulance On Route 9 Near Locust Grove Motel
MALTA, NEW YORK (January 25, 2022) – Several people were injured in a Malta car accident between a box truck and an ambulance on Route 9 not far from Locust Grove Motel.
Malta police officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:45 p.m. on January 23. An ambulance was on its way to transport a patient to Saratoga Hospital when it was involved in a collision with a box truck.
The force of the impact cause the ambulance to slide into a ditch and catch fire. However, a patient was able to be removed from the ambulance before the fire started.
A second ambulance was called to the scene and finished transporting the patient to Saratoga Hospital. State Police said that the box truck was attempting to make a U-turn prior to the collision.
There was a lot of snow on the ground when the collision took place. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Malta Truck Accidents
Car accidents are much more likely to happen during periods of inclement weather and reduced visibility. According to the United States Department of Transportation, “Every year, nearly 900 people are killed and nearly 76,000 people are injured in vehicle crashes during snowfall or sleet. Snow and ice increase road maintenance costs. Winter road maintenance accounts for roughly 20 percent of state DOT maintenance budgets.” There are a number of steps that drivers should take to avoid accidents during inclement weather.
- All drivers should slow down when the roads are slick with ice or snow.
- Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
- Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
All drivers must exercise due care to avoid collisions. Driving the speed limit could very well be dangerous if the road conditions are poor. Pursuant to New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1163, “No person shall turn a vehicle at an intersection […] or move right or left upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” If a driver makes a U-turn into the path of another vehicle, they will typically be held liable in the event of a crash. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any box truck accident.
- The employment status of the box truck driver should be determined.
- Surveillance footage of the crash should be sought.
- Photos of the accident site should be taken.
- A thorough investigation should be conducted.
If a truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Any person that is injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to seek aid through a bodily injury claim.
