Reckless driving results in millions of crashes and thousands of fatalities each year. Reckless driving claimed two innocent lives in separate car crashes in the New York area at the end of last week.
In the first collision, 39-year-old Lisette Quintanilla was rear ended by a speeding drunk driver identified as 26-year-old Nicole Pollock. The crash happened just after midnight on February 2nd as Quintanilla and her 8-year-old son, who was a passenger in the car, were driving on the Meadowbrook State Parkway. She was in the northbound lane just after exit M7 when Pollack rear ended her. The crash caused her car to veer off the road and into a tree. Quintanilla was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died of her injuries. Her son suffered a broken arm.
Pollock first attempted to flee the scene of the accident as the police were attending to the victims. She then resisted arrest by fighting with the police as they handcuffed her. She was charged with vehicular manslaughter, DUI and assault. When she appeared in court, she plead not guilty to the charges. The judge refused to release her on bail and instead ordered her to stay in jail pending a trial because he deemed her a flight risk.
In a second car accident, a wrong way driver crashed into another car, killing two and injuring three more. Jamie Paucar was driving his 17-year-old son and two of his friends to a basketball game when they were tragically struck by a car driving the wrong way on Interstate 287 East in Harrison. Paucar and his son died at the scene of the accident. The other two young men in the back seat suffered serious injuries. The wrong-way motorist, who was alone in his car, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Investigation is still underway as to what actually happened.
