Preventing Preventable Medical Errors That Cause Unnecessary Pain and Agony

Medical Malpractice AttorneyDuring the course of medical treatment, physicians are trusted to make correct decisions. Often these decisions are the difference between successful treatment and devastating injuries that lead to life altering changes for the patient. Although not all medical errors are preventable, most are. And eliminating these preventable errors will not only avoid the patient from experiencing unnecessary pain and agony, but it will also save the patient thousands of dollars in additional medical costs.

A preventable medical error could have saved Frederick S. Southwick both his leg and more than $200,000 in medical treatment. In a New York Times article, Southwick told his story of how he needed to have an above-the-knee amputation due to a preventable medical error seventeen years earlier.

According to the article, during a 1995 surgery, doctors left a pressurized cuff above Southwick’s knee for longer than necessary. This caused the vessels to progressively scar and become calcified, eventually blocking all blood flow to his lower leg and leading to an amputation nearly two decades later.

This preventable medical error caused Southwick to lose a limb, incur approximately $200,000 in hospital bills for the amputation and cost of a prosthesis, and lose months of work, the article further stated.

In study conducted by the Institute of Medicine, there are approximately 44,000 to 98,000 deaths per year because of preventable medical errors in the United States, the article noted. This means for every death, there are likely to be at least 10 serious injuries. In other words, approximately one million patients are seriously injured each year due to preventable medical errors.
