The Potential of Black Boxes on New York City Cranes

Over the past few years, the construction industry has boomed in New York. It seems there is construction on every street corner. Although this is a great sign for the economy and the developers building in the state, it can also mean more potential catastrophic and even fatal accidents for the construction workers.

According to the New York City Buildings Department, 12 workers died on construction sites in New York City in the 2016 calendar year. This number is up from eight in 2014. The total has not been that high since the previous construction boom when 12 workers died in 2007 and 19 in 2008. The majority of these accidents occur on cranes.

The City’s Response: Installation of Black Boxes on Cranes

In response to these horrific construction accident deaths, a city panel is urging the use of a black box-like device on cranes in order to gather data on crane activity. These black boxes could potentially provide us with more information about learning how cranes are being operated and help determine what is causing these crane accidents on construction sites. Another potential requirement that the panel is looking into is the requirement of installing anemometers. These devices measure wind gusts which last little as three seconds.

These recommendations will be reviewed by the Department of Buildings. The Department would implement any requirements in their power, and the rest would be worked out with the City Council.
