Peloton Recalls Tread+ and Tread Treadmills After Reported Injuries & Death

Peloton TreadmillsPeloton is recalling its Tread+ and Tread treadmills, less than one month after fighting with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over the agency’s “urgent warning” regarding the potential dangers of the treadmills and request for a recall of the machines.

Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. is investigating and handling injury claims of individuals who have been injured or lost a loved one due to a Peloton treadmill. Our legal team is dedicated to pursuing compensation claims for victims of this dangerous product.

Peloton Recall

On April 17, 2021, the CPSC announced a warning to stop using the popular Peloton Tread+ treadmills altogether. The machines have been linked to at least 39 injuries and the death of a 6-year-old boy.

On May 5, 2021 the CPSC officially announced the recall of the Peloton Tread+ treadmill after being linked to 70 incidents and one death. Twenty-nine of the reports involved children who were injured by the treadmill. The recall was based on the serious risks the machines pose to children for abrasions, fractures and deaths. The CPSC specifically announced that “Adult users, children, pets and objects can be pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill, posing a risk of injury or death.”

Peloton’s Response to the Recall

On May 7, 2021 Peloton stated that the company will stop the sale of the treadmills altogether and plans to offer full refunds for the treadmills, which cost $4,295. The recall comes with an apology from Peloton CEO, John Foley, who said that Peloton “made a mistake” in fighting the commission’s request for a recall.

For consumers who want to keep their treadmill, the company is working on software improvements that will automatically lock the Tread+ treadmill after use and require a passcode to unlock it. Additionally, Peloton has offered to move consumers’ treadmills to a locked room.
