Liability For Syracuse Hit-And-Run Collisions
Far too many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in hit-and-run collisions. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds. The 2,049 fatalities that resulted from hit-and-run crashes in 2016 were the highest number ever recorded (NHTSA, 2017).” There are several steps that should be taken after any hit-and-run collision.
- Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.
The vast majority of car accidents are completely preventable. Even if a pedestrian is in the middle of a road, drivers must exercise all due care to avoid hitting them. If a driver fails to take evasive action to avoid a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The family of any pedestrian that died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
