Pedestrian Killed In Queens Car Accident On Northern Boulevard

QUEENS, NEW YORK (April 16, 2022) – An elderly pedestrian has tragically died in Queens after they were hit by a car backing out of a parking lot on Northern Boulevard.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:20 a.m. on Sunday. An elderly pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when they were hit by a car.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Sadly, he died three days later.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Queens Pedestrian Accidents

Far too many people are seriously injured or killed in New York City pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Pedestrians aged 65 and older accounted for 20% of all pedestrian deaths and an estimated 10% of all pedestrian injuries in 2017. One in every five children under the age of 15 killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians in 2017.” There are a number of steps that cities can take in order to protect pedestrians.

  • Officials should study roadways and intersections with a history of collisions.
  • Police officers should heavily enforce traffic violations likely to contribute to pedestrian accidents.
  • Officials should introduce traffic calming measures on roadways with a history of speeding.

All drivers are supposed to exercise caution in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. There is simply no reason that a driver should ever hit a pedestrian as they are backing up. These types of collisions tend to take place when drivers fail to check what’s behind them. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any pedestrian accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any victim that died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, insurance companies will often fight hard to deny any responsibility for an accident. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
