Pedestrian Killed In Gramercy Car Accident By 3rd Avenue

GRAMERCY, NEW YORK (July 12, 2023) – One person was killed and several people were injured in a Gramercy car accident by 3rd Avenue and East 21st Street.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. A driver was driving at a high rate of speed when he struck a bicyclist and several pedestrians crossing the road.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help all of the victims. Sadly, one person died due to their injuries and several other people were injured.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Gramercy Pedestrian Accidents

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of car accidents. According to the NHTSA, “For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2021, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.” There are a number of other factors that could contribute to a pedestrian collision.

  • Distracted driving
  • Poor road conditions
  • Driver fatigue
  • Inclement weather

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are avoidable and involve some amount of driver error. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The family of any person that died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
