Pedestrian Killed In Commack Car Accident on Veterans Memorial Highway

COMMACK, NEW YOK (March 15, 2023) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Commack car accident along Veterans Memorial Highway, east of Jericho Turnpike.

Commack police officials are saying that the collision took place around 10:39 p.m. on Wednesday. A pedestrian was walking southbound when they were hit by a KIA Soul.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Sadly, the pedestrian died due to the severe nature of their injuries.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Commack Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are uniquely vulnerable in car accidents. They lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be overlooked. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “More than 7,000 pedestrians were killed on our nation’s roads in crashes involving a motor vehicle in 2020. That’s about one death every 75 minutes.” There are many steps that drivers should take in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.

  • Drivers should slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them.
  • Drivers should take their vehicles to be periodically inspected.

Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. When a driver fails to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any pedestrian collision.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

The family of any pedestrian that is killed in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one. Sadly, though, drivers will often fight extremely hard to deny responsibility for any collision.
