Liability In Suffolk County Car Accidents

Motorcyclists have a naturally small profile and are more likely to be overlooked. This is especially true at night when visibility is reduced. Per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in collisions. There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to avoid colliding with motorcyclists.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of reduced visibility.
  • Drivers should use their turn signals to let others know of their intentions.

The vast majority of motorcycle accidents are totally preventable. They often take place when drivers make dangerous left turns. According to New York Vehicle Code 1141, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” If a driver makes an abrupt left turn in front of a motorcyclist, they will typically be held at fault in the event of a collision. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any motorcycle accident.

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

The family of any victim that died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the unexpected expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one. Sadly, insurance companies will often fight to deny accountability for any accident. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
