Otsego County Officials Investigating Deadly Oneonta House Explosion That Left One Person Dead

One Person Killed In Oneonta House Explosion

ONEONTA, NEW YORK (December 16, 2023) – One person has tragically died in a Oneonta house explosion that spread debris for hundreds of yards.

Oneonta officials are saying that the explosion took place around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. A residential home exploded and sent heavy flames and smoke out of the windows.

Photos of the aftermath of the explosion show a chaotic mess.  Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to put out the fire and help the victims.

Sadly, one person died in the explosion. A full investigation remains ongoing a this time.

Liability For Oneonta House Explosions

Gas leaks remain one of the leading causes of residential house explosions each year. According to RP Gas Piping, “Across the U.S., there are about 286 serious natural gas explosions per year that cause over $50,000 worth of damage, severe injury, or loss of life. Between 1998 and 2017, 15 people per year on average died in incidents related to gas distribution in the U.S.” There are a number of steps that gas companies should take to prevent home explosions.

  • Gas companies should perform regular inspections on their gas lines.
  • Gas companies should put in place leak detection systems to identify and respond to gas leaks.
  • Gas companies should ensure that their workers are well-trained in safety protocols.

Depending on the facts of any case, a gas company could be liable if a person is injured in a gas line explosion. All property owners in New York have a legal responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the protection of all persons on a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. When a gas company has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with a property, steps must be taken to remedy the dangerous condition. Victims of gas explosions tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Burn injuries

The vast majority of residential home explosions are preventable. There are often dozens of red flags before any house explosion. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. The family of any person that died in a house explosion may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
