Northrop Grumman Faces Lawsuits After Bethpage Residents Develop Cancer

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Used Bethpage Community Park As Chemical Dumping Site Before Local Residents Began Developing Cancer

Northrop Grumman Faces Lawsuits After Bethpage Residents Develop Cancer

BETHPAGE, NEW YORK (May 13, 2024) – A number of lawsuits have been filed after residents of Bethpage developed cancer, which many believe is related to the toxic chemicals dumped by Northrop Grumman.

In one lawsuit, three out of four members of a family were diagnosed with cancer just 20 months apart, in 2015 and 2017. The lawsuits come after Northrop Grumman used Bethpage Community Park as a dumping ground for toxic chemicals for many years.

Chemicals dumped at the site include trichloroethylene and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). There has been a renewed concern for local residents in recent weeks after several drums of toxic chemicals were discovered buried in the ground.

A cleanup to remove the chemical drums and contaminated soil has already been planned.

Don’t Wait: If you have become sick or developed cancers related to VOC exposure, you may have legal recourse. The toxic tort attorneys at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. can evaluate the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. You can reach out to us anytime at (516) 908-9792.

Liability For Chemical Exposure Inside Bethpage Community Park

Exposure to certain chemicals, including trichloroethylene (TCE) can lead to a variety of different cancers and other ailments. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, “The United States Environmental Protection Agency has determined that TCE can cause cancer in humans – especially kidney cancer and possibly liver cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma—which is cancer of the lymph system. Exposure to TCE does not mean you will get cancer, however, your chance of getting cancer will be increased.” There are a number of other illnesses commonly associated with TCE and other volatile organic compounds.

  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Severe neurological effects
  • Bladder cancer
  • Weakened immune system

Every company in New York has a legal responsibility to maintain their property in a reasonably safe condition. Companies cannot dump chemicals anywhere that they like, even if they own or control the area in question. There are strict regulations for hazardous waste management set forth in 6 NYCRR Parts 370, 371, 372, 373, 374, and 376. If a company improperly disposes of chemicals, which then hurt local residents, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several steps should be taken if a person suspects that their illness may be linked to chemical exposure.

  • Medical records related to your illnesses should be preserved.
  • Work records related to the storage and dumping of the hazardous material should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.
  • An experienced toxic tort attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after exposure to toxic chemicals. In many situations, illnesses related to exposure may not present until many years or decades later. Companies like Northrop Grumman have demonstrated time and time again that they will do everything in their power to deny responsibility. This is true even when the illnesses that people develop are closely tied to TCE exposure. Any person living near Bethpage Community Park may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
