On Wednesday, May 10th, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state will start allowing companies to test self-driving car on its roads.
“We are taking a careful yet balanced approach to incorporating autonomous vehicles on our roads to reduce dangerous driving habits, decrease the number of accidents, and save lives on New York roadways,”Cuomo said in a statement.
The Empire State has started accepting applications from companies interested in testing their self-driving cars through a yearlong pilot program. The race to this futuristic technology has advanced despite controversy caused by a number of accidents, the idea of not having a human behind the wheels, and the need for new infrastructure.
Nevertheless, supporters of the program remain confident that self-driving cars will make the roads more efficient, safer, and reduce the dangers of driver error.
