Traffic related deaths have spiked in 2020 despite the drop in the number of cars on the road due to the coronavirus pandemic. There have been 175 traffic fatalities in New York City between January 1st and October 4th 2020 according to a recent article in the New York Post. Last year in the same time frame 169 people died.
While these numbers may seem pretty similar, the situation in 2020 was vastly different from 2019. New Yorkers were mandated to quarantine and stay at home for three months in early 2020. This lockdown should have resulted in a decline in fatalities. But instead there was an increase in the number of traffic fatalities. Drivers saw the empty New York City roads as an invitation to engage in risky behavior like speeding, driving under the influence and driving unrestrained.
Surge in Accidents in NYC
Motorcycle and car accident deaths are driving the surge as evidenced by the numbers. Thus far in 2020, 38 motorcyclists and 50 car occupants have died in city crashes, compared to 22 and 37, respectively, the same time in 2019.
There have only been four fewer bicycle fatalities than this time last year. As of October 4, 2019, 23 bicyclists were killed in crashes on the way to 28 total deaths for the year, the highest bicycle death toll in two decades. This carnage has happened despite a drastic drop in traffic during the height of New York City’s COVI-19 lockdown, and in the months since.
