Two New Jersey transit buses collided in the Lincoln Tunnel at around 8:40 a.m. on Monday, September 26th, injuring a total of 46 passengers on board and causing extensive delays during the morning commute. The injured victims were treated at the scene or transported to area hospitals.
Emergency workers had to cut the door out of one of the buses to remove passengers. The vehicles were headed into Manhattan at the time of the collision. One of the bus drivers was issued a summons for an unsafe lane change.
Common Causes of Bus Accidents
Negligently operated buses present a major threat to the public, motorists, and passengers. A motor vehicle accident may result if the bus driver:
- Texts or talks on a cell phone
- Is intoxicated or inebriated
- Drives long-distance routes without adequate sleep
- Lacks training and experience
- Fails to monitor the back end of the bus during turns or lane changes
In most cases, motor coach companies are at fault for the negligence of their bus drivers. The rules and regulations may encourage the bus operators to forgo sleep, take stimulants or other controlled substances to keep the bus on schedule. Furthermore, in an effort to cut costs, the company may hire drivers with a history of traffic citations and without the necessary experience to safely operate a bus.
