Liability In New Jersey School Bus Accidents

School buses are among the safest forms of transportation for passengers. But they pose a number of unique hazards for pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. For example, school buses have a wide turning radius which makes side impact collisions more likely. School buses also have large blind spots. If a bus driver is distracted even for a moment this can lead to a collision. Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • PTSD
  • Lacerations
  • Head trauma
  • Broken bones

School bus drivers must get a commercial driver’s license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Many school bus collisions are due to school bus drivers that fail to check their blind spots when making turns. According to New Jersey Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 39:4-90, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left shall yield the right of way to any vehicle traveling from the opposite direction that is close enough to pose a hazard. It is important that the proper steps are taken after a bus accident.

  • Victims should seek medical care.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved
  • An experienced bus accident attorney should be consulted.

Any person that is injured in a school bus accident may be able to seek aid through a bodily injury claim. Buses that can carry 16 or more people must have at least $5,000,000 worth of liability coverage. This can help cover many of the unexpected costs associated with a serious collision. A New York bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
