Multiple People Injured In New Haven School Bus Accident

New Haven police officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:39 a.m. on Wednesday. A school bus was involved in a collision with a pickup truck.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help all of the victims. Sadly, one person died in the collision and several others were apparently injured.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For New Haven Bus Accidents

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in bus accidents every year. According to the Journalist’s Resource, on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to bus accidents.

  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions
  • Driver fatigue

Many car accidents are due to drivers that are speeding. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code § 1180, no person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than would be safe or reasonable given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down prior to hitting another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are several steps that should be taken after any bus accident.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any collision. But it is important for accident victims to know that they do have rights. Any person that is injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. It is important that all evidence is properly preserved after a collision. Evidence is what will ultimately be used to determine liability.
