Multiple People Injured In Bronx Partial Building Collapse

Seven Story Residential Building In The Bronx Partially Collapsed Injuring Several People

Multiple People Injured In Bronx Partial Building Collapse

THE BRONX, NEW YORK (December 13, 2023) – Several people were injured when a residential apartment in The Bronx partially collapsed at 1915 Billingsley Terrace.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:30 p.m. on Monday.  The apartment building partially collapsed sending debris everywhere.

It was a chaotic scene as NYFD officials searched through the rubble for victims. Several people were taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment.

A full investigation into the cause of the collapse remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For New York City Building Collapses

Partial and whole building collapses are much more common than many people may realize. According to NOLA, “When internal load-bearing structural elements fail, a building will collapse into itself, and exterior walls pulled into the falling structure. This scenario may be caused by construction activity, an earthquake or fire, and may result in a dense debris field with a small footprint.” There are a number of steps that should be taken in order to prevent building collapses.

  • Building owners must ensure that buildings are designed by qualified and licensed engineers.
  • Buildings should be made from high-quality construction material that meet safety requirements.
  • Contractors must adhere to all building codes and regulations.
  • Contractors should perform regular inspections on the building’s structure, foundation and overall condition.

Depending on the facts of any case, a building owner could be liable if someone is injured in a building collapse. Building owners in New York have a legal responsibility to maintain their properties in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for the protection of everyone on a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice that a building is in a dangerous condition they must act. Victims of building collapses tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

It can be hard to know where to begin after any building collapse. Victims are often left without a place to live and high medical bills. To make matters worse, property owners will often do everything that they can to deny liability for any accident. This is why it is important that evidence is properly preserved after any building collapse. Evidence is what will ultimately reveal who was at fault for any accident. A premises liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
