Driver Made Illegal Left Turn Before Batavia Motorcycle Collision

Motorcyclist Injured In Batavia Car Accident on West Main Street

BATAVIA, NEW YORK (May 28, 2023) – A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a Batavia car accident on West Main Street by the Tops Supermarket.

Bataiva police officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday. The driver of a motor vehicle made an illegal left turn in front of a motorcyclist prior to the collision.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Liability For Batavia Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists are uniquely vulnerable in collisions. According to the National Safety Council, “Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities, 18% of all occupant fatalities, and 4% of all occupant injuries in 2020.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a motorcycle collision.

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Poor road conditions
  • Dangerous left turns

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing collisions. Many car accidents are due to drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code § 1141, any driver intending to turn left must yield the right of way to any vehicle traveling from the opposite direction that is close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a driver makes an abrupt left turn in front of a motorcyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
