Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in semi-truck accidents every year. According to the IIHS, “There were 35,766 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2020 in which 38,824 deaths occurred. This resulted in 11.7 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.34 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The fatality rate per 100,000 people ranged from 4.9 in Massachusetts to 25.4 in Mississippi.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to semi-truck accidents.

  • Speeding

Semi-trucks tend to have large blind spots. A number of collisions are due to truck drivers that make dangerous turns in the roadway. If a semi-truck driver makes an abrupt left turn in front of another vehicle, they could be held at fault in the event of a collision. Their employer could also be held at fault if the truck driver was an employee for a company. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any semi-truck accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

The family of any victim that died in a semi-truck accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
