Man Killed In Brooklyn Police Van Accident Along Easter Parkway

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (April 15, 2022) – A man has tragically died in a Brooklyn car accident with a police van on Easter Parkway.

New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. A man was standing in the center median when he was hit by a police car.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. He was taken to the Kings County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Brooklyn Police Car Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in car accidents every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “an estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a pedestrian accident.

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Driver distraction

According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 1104(e), all police officers must operate their vehicle with due regard for the safety of all persons. Officers are granted a great deal of immunity if they are responding to an actual emergency. Still, if an officer operates with a “reckless disregard for the safety of others, they could be liable for a crash. If they are not responding to an emergency, they must obey all traffic laws and exercise due care to avoid pedestrians like every other driver. Victims of pedestrian accidents tent to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Head injuries

The family of any victim that died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are. There are, however, statute of limitations associated with civil claims.
