A 91-year-old pedestrian man was fatally struck by a car in downtown Manhattan, New York on January 25th. He was crossing Canal Street at the intersection of Elizabeth Street around 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by a car belonging to the New York City Sanitation Department. The elderly man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition suffering from trauma all over his body. He passed away from his injuries later the same day.
The 61-year-old sanitation truck driver remained at the scene of the accident. Police did not charge him for the victim’s death. Investigation of the exact cause of the accident is still under way.
Canal Street is deemed as one of the most dangerous streets in Manhattan. Statistics show that, on average, there are at least two accidents every day on Canal Street. Since 2016, 129 motorists, 54 bicyclists and 52 pedestrians have been injured in motor vehicle collisions on Canal Street. These accidents have resulted in the death of one cyclist and one motorist. And now one pedestrian.
