The medical profession is one of these professions where even the slightest mistake or error can lead to fatal results. And this was no exception when Coney Island Hospital made a mistake, which led to the death of an elderly woman on June 9th.
Medical Negligence Leads to Death
Coney Island Hospital’s blood lab failed to accurately identify an 84-year-old patient’s blood type. This error resulted in the hospital’s medical staff to mistakenly give the patient a transfusion of the wrong blood type, which ultimately resulted in the patient’s death on June 9th.
In response to this medical negligence, New York’s state Health Department ordered the hospital to send all of its patients’ blood tests to other facilities and labs for testing.
These types of medical negligence generally occur in approximately one of every 14,000 transfusions. And the results are typically fatal complications.
