Caleb Schwab suffered a fatal neck injury while riding the “Verrückt” the world’s tallest water slide. This 10-year-old boy was decapitated and found dead in a pool at the bottom of the slide.
The accident occurred at a Kansas water park – the Schlitterbahn. The word “Verrückt” is German and means insane, which is totally appropriate since it was named the tallest water slide in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2014. The ride shoots riders down its record-breaking height at 50 miles per hour.
The opening of the ride was delayed after tests on the 168-foot waterslide had rafts flying off the slide. When the ride was first opened, it restricted rides to individuals 14 years or older. However, only a month after the opening, the park removed the minimum age restriction and only required a height minimum of 54 inches in order to get on the ride. This age limit would have prevented Caleb’s death.
Caleb was visiting the park with his father, State Rep. Scott Schwab. They joined other government workers at the park that day in a special event for elected officials. Caleb boarded the raft with two other women who were not related to him. The two women suffered face injuries. Caleb suffered a fatal neck injury. Police are treating Caleb’s death as a “civil matter” rather than a criminal investigation.
