CENTRAL ISLIP, NEW YORK (December 20, 2023) – A 65-year-old man has tragically died in a Central Islip car accident by East Suffolk Avenue at Lowell Avenue.

Central Islip police officials are saying that the collision took place around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. A small SUV and a white sedan struck the victim.

A full investigation into the central Islip hit-and-run crash remains ongoing.

Liability For Central Islip Car Accidents

Bicyclists lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are much more likely to be overlooked in the first place. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Bicycle trips make up only 1% of all trips in the United States. However, bicyclists account for over 2% of people who die in a crash involving a motor vehicle on our nation’s roads.” There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to avoid hitting bicyclists.

  • Drivers should maintain at least three feet of separation from bicyclists at all times.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a bicyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. The family of any bicyclist killed in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
