A bicyclist died from serious injuries after a car in New York City hit him. The tragic accident happened on November 17th around 2:40 p.m. 84-year-old Yau-Teg Fung, of Queens, was pedaling down Alderton Street near Fleet Street in Rego Park when he collided with a car driven by an 80-year-old woman. The car had just entered the intersection and into the cyclist’s path. Fung was thrown from his bike and found by police sprawled out on the street.
He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital suffering from a massive head injury from being thrown off his bike. He died from his injuries after 10 days of hospitalization. The police told the NY Daily News that the motorist had come to a stop at a stop sign and was in the intersection when the bicyclist collided into her back door. No criminal charges were filed.
Shocking Pedestrian Accident Statistics
When a crash happens between a motor vehicle and a bicycle, it is the cyclist who is most likely to be seriously injured. This is because a bicycle lacks many safety features, such as airbags and seatbelts.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), bicyclists accounted for 2 percent of all traffic deaths and 2 percent of all crash-related injuries in 2014. A large percentage of bicycle related accidents can be avoided if motorists and bicyclists follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other.
Common Bicycle Accident Injuries
When a car and bicyclist collide, it often results in serious injuries to the cyclist. Common bicycle accident injuries include:
- Broken or fracture bones
- Head injuries, such as traumatic brain injury
- Spinal cord injuries
- Internal bleeding
- Neck and back injuries
